My options
There are a number of different ways to treat arthritis, which can, individually
or in combination, help you to lessen your pain and be more mobile.
Physical therapy
Your doctor may refer you to a physiotherapist, chiropractor or osteopath, who can
manipulate your bones and joints. (Availability of these treatments may depend on
where you live.) These practitioners can help you improve your posture and teach
you ways to move around with less pain.
Some people have found that massage can help to reduce stress. Other alternative
therapies, such as acupuncture, aromatherapy or reflexology, can also help to
relieve the symptoms of arthritis. For more information on these therapies,
visit the Association of Reflexologists at
www.aor.org.uk
or an informative aromatherapy website,

Medicines
To help you overcome your pain and get on with everyday life, your doctor may
suggest that you take a painkiller. Some painkillers are available without
prescription, but it is always a good idea to discuss the possible side effects
of these medicines with your doctor.
Depending on the severity of your arthritis, anti-inflammatories may be prescribed
to reduce the inflammation in your joints and help you move around with greater
ease.
