Being diagnosed with diabetes needn't be the end of the life you enjoy. But it is important to remember that diabetes is a serious condition and therefore it is essential that you listen to what your healthcare professional says and follow his or her advice.

Lifestyle changes which can help
There are some simple lifestyle changes you can try, which won't just help you keep your diabetes under control – but will improve your overall health as well.

Adapting what you eat to reduce your blood sugar is an important first step. Eating balanced meals, cutting back on sugary foods and choosing wholegrain bread and cereals can make a big difference. If you also happen to be overweight, this is a good opportunity to shed some of your excess pounds.

Starting to take some mild exercise stimulates your cells to use whatever insulin is available in your bloodstream, removing the sugar from your blood and converting it to energy. Simple things like walking the dog every day and walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift can make a real difference.
