How medicines fit in

There are four main types of medication prescribed for erection problems. In many cases, they can help put you back in control of your sex drive.

Types of medicine used
Oral treatments to help you have sex naturally have become available in the last few years. The majority of men with erection problems are prescribed this method.

Intracavernosal injections involve injections directly into the base of the penis. This relaxes the blood vessels and allows more blood to flow into the penis. The procedure is generally easy to learn and not painful.

Transurethral therapy is similar to the injection option above. It involves inserting a pellet into the urethra, using a special disposable applicator. The medicine is then absorbed through the wall of the urethra.

Hormone treatment can help overcome any hormone imbalances that may be affecting your sex drive. Your doctor will diagnose this by doing blood tests, although lack of male hormones is quite an unusual cause of erection difficulties.

Things to consider
An unhealthy lifestyle can have an impact on your sex drive. If you are a heavy smoker or drinker for example, this could have a negative effect. So, even if you are taking medication, it may be worth considering trying to make some other lifestyle changes too.
