Ulcerative colitis
Everyone deserves the chance to go on holiday now and then and, with a little
preparation and planning, there's no reason why ulcerative colitis should get in
the way of your enjoyment.
Simple steps to take before you go
- Pack your medication in your cabin baggage, just in case the luggage you
put in the hold goes missing for a few days.
- Request an aisle seat so you can get to the toilet quickly if you need to.
- Book a special meal – When you reserve your flights, ask your airline for
a plain or a non-spicy meal.
While you're away
- Enjoy the local cuisine, but try to avoid things you know will aggravate
your digestive system. Don't be embarrassed to ask what's in a dish if the menu
isn't clear.
-
Get active – Making the most of local walks, pools and fitness
facilities will help to prevent muscle weakness and calcium loss from bones, both of
which are side effects of ulcerative colitis, but consult your doctor before making any
changes to your exercise routine.
