Multiple conditions

People who have been diagnosed with COPD may also be suffering from other illnesses, including high blood pressure and heart disease.

Research suggests that the youngest age group (those aged 35 to 45) may be at the greatest risk of these diseases. One recent study found that, compared with people the same age who don't have COPD, this age group is:

  • Seven times more likely to be suffering from heart disease compared with those who don't have COPD
  • Three times more likely to have a stroke
  • 10 times more likely to suffer a heart attack

Giving up smoking will reduce the risk of illness and early death from all these conditions.

The symptoms of COPD can sometimes be frightening - being short of breath, for example. Not surprisingly, it can make people feel depressed or anxious, both of which may need to be treated.
